Big cities all have zoos where you can watch dangerous animals from a close – yet safe – viewing distance. But this isn’t the real thing. Everyone dreams of one day seeing wild animals running around in their natural habitat: Lions going after impala, hippos lazing at the water-hole and even vultures circling the ground looking for pray. A safari in Africa is an experience that you will not forget any time soon.
The Kruger National Park in South Africa is amongst the most popular wildlife reserves on Earth. Here you can discover the Big 5 of Africa (elephants, leopards, elephants, rhinos and the buffalo). These animals became known as the Big 5 not because of a clever marketing campaign but because these were the most difficult animals to hunt when it was still allowed. To be recognized as a great hunter you had to shoot the Big 5.
When going to the Kruger National Park, you’ll probably arrive at the airport in Johannesburg. Talk to one of the operators there to find a cheap rental car and then drive towards the Kruger National Park. This could take around 2 -3 hours. There is various kinds Kruger Park accommodation available. Depending on your budget, you can book cheaper or more luxurious accommodation inside or outside the Kruger Park. When booking accommodation outside the national park, you have to take into consideration the time it will take to travel towards the gates of the park and you will also not be able to stay inside the park for as long, as you will need to drive back to the gates before the park closes. The most convenient variety of accommodation will be those within the park. Most adventure lodges are situated right at a water-hole so that you can have breakfast or dinner while watching wildlife just a few metres away. But you will also find budget options inside the park, as there are many designated camp sites where you can book a tent or pitch your own. This is definitely something for every adventurer.
You also have to decide whether you intend to do a self-drive safari with your own rental car or book one of the many tour operators that are working inside the Kruger Park. During a self-drive safari you have the freedom to drive wherever you want and you will not be dependent on what others will want to do. But the upside of one fo the Kruger Park Tours is that the tour guides are very well informed and always have something interesting to say. They are also connected by radio and know where the most wildlife is situated.
There are also a few safari options along the Garden Route and in Cape Town if you do not have the time to fly all the way up to Johannesburg. But these are no substitutes for the Kruger National Park. You will not experience the Big 5 like this anywhere else!
