In the small town of Clunes you will find the Clunes Bottle Museum. The museum is home to more than 6,000 unusual bottles and is said to be the biggest collection in the Southern Hemisphere. Clunes is also popular as a town in movie sets. This is largely due to the fact that almost the entire town is covered with heritage listed buildings. Films including Mad Max and Ned Kelly were shot along Fraser Street in Clunes, a street that today, still strongly reflects the magnificent gold rush era architecture.

Heading west of the region, you will find the small town of Avoca with its residency just under 1,000, the town is loaded with amazing history such as being home to the oldest operating chemist and butchers in the whole of Victoria and for the butchers, the whole of Australia.

Heading south Lake Wendouree can be found in one of the bigger cities in the goldfield region, Ballarat. First known as Yuille’s Swamp, the lake was named after William Yuille, who was known as Ballarat’s first ever resident. Mostly used for recreation, the lake is home to a numer of amazind wildlife species. Along with the more common wildlife such as, swans and ducks, the lake is also called home to around 100 native water-rats. In the gold rush era of Ballarat, all gold miners had to own a gold licence to be able to search particular Ballarat land areas for gold. To find a miner without a licence meant that they would either have to pay a fine or find themselves chained to a log until they did.

East of the goldfields, we find the popular city of Castlemaine. Known for its amazing Georgian style buildings, Castlemaine is home to the Castlemaine Botanical Gardens, one of Victoria’s oldest public gardens. Impressively, the gardens were transformed from bleak mining landscape to amazing public gardens in the 1860′s. The city is also the birth place to the creator of the Chiko Roll, a favourite Australian savoury snack.

The Victorian goldfields region has quite a lot of historical and interesting facts and it most definately does not end here. There are many impressive art galleries, public gardens, amazing local food and wines, and interesting historic attractions including Sovereign Hill and the Gold Museum in Ballarat.
