Looking For A Holiday Rental In Prague? – Prague New Town Vs. Old Town

Why most of the people is searching for vacation rental only in the Prague Old Town? What is the main advantage of staying in Prague Old Town holiday rental? What about the Prague New Town vacation apartment? What is the difference and is there also any disadvantage?

What to expect

Old Town

There is no discussions – Prague Old Town is the main touristic centre full of markets and souvenir shops where you are so closed and touched by ancient times of Middle Ages (be prepared for crowds of people in every touristic spot). And disadvantages?

Lack of supermarkets (food, drogstores, bakery etc..) so you have to relay just on the most expensive restaurants. Consider a greater distance to public transport (metro, bus, train) and large pedestrian zones with no car access. Quality of apartments – even if the furnishings and equipments of each holiday rental in Prague Old Town are new and modern there are usual inconveniences related to technical status of buildings, many times hundred of years old even still ok with technical norms which can differ from other countries (creaking floor, weak water pressure, no elevator, also bad status of common areas of the house such us corridors and staircases, humidity, darkness, difficult manipulating with street entrance gates, etc..).

Many people don’t pay attention to theese (for someone important) facts by looking only for the most romantic touristic location and after arrival they are surpised by the unexpected state of the building or its parts. We reccommend you to have more interest about above stated facts so you can avoid many disappointments and also you can know what to expect. But when planning your stay in Old Town you should expect theese little things because this is the Old Town!

It is neccessary to say that if you are looking for posh place you should rather go to the hotel. We think that if you choosed a vacation rental it is not only because of price but also because you prefer privacy and independence and you are familiar (or you don’t mind the differences) with different kind of things as handling devices, doors, etc..

New Town

Since there is not so huge concentration of buildings in one place and there is no technical or preservative limits you can expect usually modern and large Prague holiday rental with high standards with all infrastructure and convenient public transportation in the nearest vicinity.

For example on Wenceslas Square is two metro stations and several tram stops. Also shopping and entertanment possibilities are unlimited, you can find most of the venues right on this main Prague boulevard. What is the best is the fact that usually you pay less or the same money (for a holiday rental of better quality or more space) and as we describe below it is a minute walk to all touristic atractions (1 min to Opera ot National Museum or 10 minutes to Old Town Square). Also for feeling to be more among the natives and not only with tourists this is good choice.

Prague city centre is cozy and small

Prague city centre is located only on area of 3 square kilometres (1,158 sq miles) while each of two parts (New and Old Town) has approximatelly one half of the area. What exactly means 1 km2 (=0,386 sq miles) for you?

Imagine one big square of the length of each side 1km (=0,621 miles) . If you want to know what is the distance of two most distant corners of this square then it is 1,4 km (=0,9 miles) which takes cca half an hour of a pleasant walk.

This example shows you that area for exploring both New Town and Old Town is perfect for walking doesn’t matter where you are located..

Where the main spots are located?

Prague New Town

Wenceslas Square
National Theatre
National Museum
Opera
New Town Brewery
Dancing House
Main train station
Main bus terminal

Prague Old Town

Old Town Square
Astronomical Clock
Old Town Hall
Charles Bridge
Powder gate

Many gotic and baroque churches

Conclusion?

There is many pros and cons and depends only on your priorities which Prague vacation rental location you choose. Just put on the paper places what you want to visit in Prague and things what you want to do. Also think what standard you expect when staying in holiday apartment and what kind of thinks you don’t like for example at your home. Put on the paper your priorities. Before making the booking ask your landlord for all questions and then decide. Good luck!
